Disaster Aid
Our family farmers and ranchers make great sacrifices and work hard to help feed the world. Senator Dorgan believes that when disaster strikes, we have an obligation to give them a helping hand, too.
When North Dakota was hit hard by drought, Senator Dorgan led the fight to pass a disaster relief bill. Despite fierce opposition from President Bush, he was able to get the bill through and get help to the producers who needed it.
When Congress began debating the 2008 Farm Bill, Senator Dorgan introduced legislation that would make the disaster aid program permanent, as it had been until the 1990s. A free-standing disaster program was added to the Farm Bill so producers who have been hit by severe weather will not see their disaster relief held hostage to political opponents.
